Cracks in the Surface
A crack may be confined to the resin layer, but it can also reflect movement in the base underneath. Before patching it, we need to understand why the crack formed.
A damaged resin driveway does not automatically mean the entire entrance needs to be dug out and rebuilt.
Some problems can be repaired locally. Other driveways may benefit from resurfacing, particularly where the foundation remains sound but the visible finish has deteriorated. Where movement or structural failure exists underneath, however, covering the problem is unlikely to provide a lasting solution.
Affordable Driveways and Patios provides resin driveway repairs and resurfacing across Dublin. We assess what has actually failed before recommending repair, resurfacing or replacement.
That distinction matters. The cheapest-looking solution on day one can become the most expensive option if the same problem returns six months later.
Resin bound surfacing can perform very well, but no driveway material is completely immune to damage. Problems often tell us something about the surface underneath, drainage, installation or the way the driveway has been used.
A crack may be confined to the resin layer, but it can also reflect movement in the base underneath. Before patching it, we need to understand why the crack formed.
Stone coming away from the surface can leave rough or bare patches. The size and extent of the affected area determine whether a local repair or broader resurfacing makes sense.
A sunken section usually points to something happening underneath the resin. Simply filling the top may not resolve a weak or settled base.
Persistent puddles may be caused by poor levels, blocked drainage, settlement or an unsuitable underlying construction. The drainage issue should be identified before resurfacing.
Edges can become vulnerable where they meet loose ground, planting or an inadequate restraint. Repair may involve strengthening the boundary as well as restoring the resin.
An older driveway may remain structurally sound but no longer look its best. In these cases, resurfacing may sometimes be considered rather than a complete reconstruction.
This is usually the most important question. The answer depends less on how old the driveway is and more on what condition the existing surface and foundation are actually in.
Repair can make sense when damage is limited to a particular section and the surrounding surface remains stable. Examples include isolated edge damage, a small failed patch or work carried out around an underground service.
Resurfacing may suit a driveway where the underlying construction is sound but the existing finish is worn, patchy or visually tired. The old surface still needs appropriate preparation before a new resin system is applied.
If significant areas are sinking, cracking repeatedly or moving because the foundation has failed, rebuilding the affected construction may provide better value than repeatedly repairing the visible surface.
A crack is a symptom. Fixing the line you can see without understanding what caused it can leave you repairing the same area again later.
Resin is installed over another structural layer. If that layer moves, the movement can affect the surface above it. Ground conditions, drainage and surrounding construction can also play a part.
This is why we inspect the area rather than automatically recommending a cosmetic patch.
Important: not every crack means the whole driveway has failed. A small isolated defect and a network of cracks across a moving surface are two very different situations.
Sometimes a local repair can be carried out, but resin repairs are not the same as filling a crack in an indoor floor.
The damaged area may need to be cut back to sound material, the cause corrected where possible and compatible material introduced into the repair.
Colour matching can also be a consideration because an older resin surface may have weathered differently from newly installed aggregate.
The repair needed depends on the type and extent of damage. We may be dealing with the resin itself, the base underneath it or another feature such as drainage or edging.
Smaller damaged sections can sometimes be cut out and repaired independently where the surrounding driveway remains sound.
Where a section has dropped, the problem underneath should be assessed. The surface may need to be removed so the base can be corrected before reinstatement.
Damaged perimeter sections may involve rebuilding or strengthening the edge before restoring the resin finish.
Problems around channels, gullies or low areas may require alterations to levels or drainage rather than simply adding more resin.
Movement around covers can create visible cracks or gaps. These areas need careful preparation because they interrupt the otherwise continuous driveway surface.
Where the base remains suitable, a larger surface can sometimes be prepared for a new resin finish rather than completely excavated.
Resurfacing sits between a small repair and a complete new driveway installation.
It can be useful where the existing base remains strong but the surface itself has become worn, unattractive or affected by numerous minor imperfections.
The important word is strong. A driveway should not be resurfaced simply because removing the old construction would cost more.
If the foundation is already moving or failing, adding a fresh layer above it may only conceal the problem temporarily.
We want to establish what has failed before discussing the finish. That helps avoid treating a structural problem as nothing more than a cosmetic defect.
We look at cracks, loose aggregate, sinking, staining, edges, repairs and any other obvious deterioration.
A single failed patch is very different from movement appearing across several parts of the driveway.
Standing water, channels and falls can provide useful clues about why particular sections are deteriorating.
Where possible, we establish whether the underlying construction remains suitable or needs remedial work.
Depending on what we find, that may be a local repair, resurfacing, partial reconstruction or a new driveway.
Not necessarily.
This is something homeowners should understand before a local patch is carried out. Existing resin has already been exposed to weather, sunlight and everyday use. New material can therefore look slightly different when it is first laid.
Aggregate colour, resin type and the age of the original driveway all influence how closely a repaired area can match.
On a small isolated repair, that visual difference may be perfectly acceptable. On a driveway with many damaged areas, wider resurfacing can sometimes provide a more consistent appearance if the base remains suitable.
A good repair is not about promising that a patch can never be seen. It is about making the area stable, tidy and appropriate for the condition of the rest of the driveway.
Existing concrete can sometimes form part of a suitable system when it remains structurally sound and appropriately prepared.
Large cracks, settlement and movement should not simply be hidden underneath resin. These issues need to be considered before the resurfacing decision is made.
Sound tarmac may also provide a suitable base in certain circumstances. Crumbling edges, major depressions and widespread failure are signs that additional work may be required.
We assess the actual driveway rather than assuming that every existing tarmac or concrete surface can automatically be covered.

| Condition | Local Repair | Resurfacing | Replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small isolated damage | Often worth assessing | Usually unnecessary | Usually unnecessary |
| Surface looks tired but base is stable | May not address appearance across whole area | Potential option | May not be required |
| Several sunken areas | Underlying cause needs investigation | Not appropriate until base is addressed | Partial or full reconstruction may be required |
| Widespread cracking | Multiple patches may be poor value | Depends on cause and base condition | May be more appropriate if structure has failed |
| Drainage problems | Drainage must also be corrected | Only after drainage solution is planned | May allow levels and drainage to be redesigned |
| Failed foundation | Cosmetic repair unlikely to solve problem | Not recommended over unstable construction | Rebuilding affected areas is normally necessary |
If water suddenly starts gathering where it did not before, the issue may not be the resin material itself.
A section of the driveway may have settled. A drainage channel could be blocked or damaged. The original levels may simply have been unsuitable.
Whatever the reason, repeatedly sweeping water away is not a repair.
The driveway should be assessed to establish why the water is collecting and what alterations are practical.
Routine care cannot correct structural problems, but keeping a sound driveway clean and dealing with small issues early can help prevent avoidable deterioration.
Resin repair does not have a useful flat price because two areas that look similar on the surface can require completely different work.
A small damaged edge may be relatively straightforward. A sunken section where the foundation underneath has failed can involve excavation, base repairs and reinstatement.
Resurfacing also depends on whether the existing driveway can actually be retained.
We therefore inspect the area before providing a quotation based on the repair required.

Repair work needs a slightly different mindset from new installation.
With a new driveway, you are starting with a clean design. With an existing driveway, the challenge is working out why a particular part has failed and how much of the original construction can sensibly be retained.
Affordable Driveways and Patios can inspect damaged resin surfaces across Dublin and explain what we believe is causing the issue before pricing the appropriate work.
If the driveway only needs a local repair, there is little sense in rebuilding everything. Equally, we do not want to hide a failed base under another decorative layer and call it fixed.
In some cases, yes. The important part is establishing why the crack appeared. An isolated surface defect may be repairable, while repeated cracking caused by movement underneath may require work to the base.
Local repairs are possible in suitable situations. The damaged area may be cut back and reinstated while retaining the surrounding surface if it remains sound.
An exact invisible match cannot always be guaranteed. Existing resin may have weathered over time, while new aggregate and resin can initially appear different. We consider the existing finish when planning a repair.
It may be possible where the existing construction remains stable and suitable. Widespread movement, sinking or structural failure should be corrected before a new resin surface is considered.
Sinking often indicates movement or settlement underneath the finished resin layer. The affected area should be investigated rather than simply topped up at surface level.
Pooling can be caused by settlement, unsuitable levels, drainage problems or the construction beneath the resin. The cause should be identified before deciding on repair work.
Sound concrete may be suitable in some situations after appropriate preparation. Badly cracked, moving or sunken concrete should not simply be covered.
Stable tarmac may be suitable for certain resin systems. Crumbling or badly damaged tarmac requires assessment before resurfacing.
A local repair will usually involve less work than a full replacement, but the cheapest option depends on the cause and extent of the damage. Repeatedly repairing a failed base can become poor value.
